A gentleman’s game. Once a week they would gather in the park to challenge each other at the chess table. The women would stand by their men and watch until one afternoon one requested to play. A bold move for the times as they were still seen as objects, possessions. Whispered conversations and grumbling as she stood next to the table. I raised my hand to silence the others and extended an open hand to offer her the opponents chair. To me the game of chess was not just a mental game of strategy but one of grace and beauty which she added to perfectly.
